Cats Down Rockets in Thriller

In a game in which all three phases of the game made key contributions, Tullahoma picked up their first win of the season. As the Wildcats edged Rockvale in a thriller 21-19 Friday night at Wilkins Stadium.

After a Tullahoma three and out to open the game, Rockvale drove deep into Wildcat territory but had to settle for a field goal attempt which was blocked by Will Hyden keeping the game scoreless.

The stalemate would hold until two plays into the second quarter when Marvancy Johnson broke free on a 47 yard run for his second touchdown of the season to put the Cats up 6-0. Chase Dodson’s PAT was wide right.

Rockvale drove all the way down to the Tullahoma five in the closing seconds of the second quarter but on the final play of the half the Rockets pass was incomplete in the back of the end zone. Keeping the score 6-0 at the intermission.

Rockvale scored on an 18 yard run by Ke’Vonate Porter to take their first lead of the night 7-6 after the extra point on their first possession of the third.

After trading punts the Cats and Rockets began trading scores. Tullahoma retook the lead on Khani Johnsons first touchdown of the season, a 48 yard reception from Lucas Reed. The two point try was no good making it 12-7 Wildcats with :59 seconds left in the third. Rockvale answered with a two yard Romeo George touchdown run. They too failed on a two point try but led 13-12 with 9:47 to play in the game.

Just five plays later Tullahoma answered as Reed found Johnson for the second time in as many possessions this time from 53 yards out. The cats two point try was again no good putting them ahead 18-13 with 6:50 left in the game. Rockvale again retook the lead on a 1 yard rush from Porter, his second score of the night. However Porter was stuffed on the two point try leaving them up only one 19-18.

After their next drive stalled just outside the Rocket 30 Tullahoma set out Chase Dodson for a 50 yard field goal attempt which he nailed giving the cats a 21-19 advantage. The Wildcats then turned Rockvale over on downs and then ran out the clock to secure the win.

Tullahoma Quaterback Lucas Reed finished the night 14-17 189 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cats Receiver Khani Johnson tallied nine catches for 146 yards and two highlight reel touchdowns to earn Owens Provisions and Apparel Player of the Game honors.

Running back Marvancy Johnson again paced the Wildcat ground attack totaling 139 yards on 19 carries.
