In an instant classic, that you heard LIVE on 93.9 The Duck, the Tullahoma Wildcats topped Marshall County 72-68 in a battle between the top two teams in District 8-3A,

The Wildcats came out of the gate strong with Xaiver Farrel putting up 9 quick points to lead 11-2 before a Marshall County timeout. Then the tigers went on a run to close the quarter and take a 17-16 lead.

Despite a couple of missed opportunities late in the quarter the Wildcats managed to win the second quarter 11-7 and take a three point lead at the half.

Though the Cats built a slight lead at times they ultimately ended up with the same three point edge through three as each team totaled 23 points in a back and forth quarter that showcased the skill and athleticism of each team.

Again trading baskets, matching big shot for big shot in the fourth the cats found themselves up 67-65 Marcus O’Neal hit a right corner three with 25 seconds left in the game to give Marshall County a 68-67 lead. After a Tullahoma timeout the Wildcats worked the ball to Khani Johnson who was fouled with 8.5 seconds left in the game.

After Marshall County used their final timeout Johnson made one of two from the foul line to tie the game. Then with fouls to give, Tullahoma fouled intentionally at midcourt to force another in bounds. The Tiger inbounding the ball called a time out they did not have after being unable to get the ball in and looking to avoid a five second call. That resulted in a technical foul. Xavier Farrel made one of two free throws to give Tullahoma the lead.

Farrell was fouled again on the ensuing inbounds play and Aja Jones who fouled was also called for a technical foul. Farrel would make 3-4 to ice the game and give the Cats the 72-68 win.

Farrell totaled 35 points and was named the Owens Provisions and Apparel Player of the Game.  Khani Johnson added 14 and Austin Tinnon tallied 10 points for Tullahoma who improved to 21-3 on the season and 5-1 in district 8-3A.

Marshall County was led by Jamahal Gentry with 17 points, Jabrae Howard (16), Aja Jones (12) and Marcus O’Neal (10) also finished in double figures for the Tigers who fell to 15-6 overall and 4-2 in district play.

Marshall County took an early 5-0 lead but the Lady Cats outscored the Tigerettes 13-2 the rest of the quarter and 18-4 the remainder of the half to build an 18-9 lead at the break. Tullahoma then held Marshall County to just 2 points in the third to build a 25-11 advantage. Marshall County scored several baskets late and actually won the fourth quarter 11-8 but the late push wasn’t enough to dig out of the early hole.
