A new sign shop is helping the Bedford County Highway Department to produce road and traffic signs for one-quarter the cost of buying them from an outside vendor. Highway Superintendent Mark Clanton says rural road signs are stolen frequently, leaving roads unmarked. Keeping up with replacing the signs can be time-consuming and expensive, with the taxpayer footing the bill for labor and new signs. Clanton said that anti-theft bar codes will also be printed to help track any signs that might be stolen in the future. The department may not be able to ever eliminate road sign theft or vandalism, but the new sign shop will make it faster and less expensive to replace signs.
