Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting involving Bedford County Sheriff’s deputies that occurred Monday evening.

At the request of 17th Judicial District Attorney General Rob Carter, TBI agents are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that two Bedford County deputies responded to a 911 call concerning a suicidal individual making threats. The deputies encountered the individual walking on State Route 64 in Shelbyville. According to reports, the individual became agitated, produced a knife, and then what appeared to be a handgun. Deputies fired, striking the individual.

The individual was transported to a Nashville hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. No deputies were injured.

TBI agents are collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for review. The TBI's role is to gather facts, not to determine the justification of an officer's actions. That decision rests with the District Attorney General.

The TBI does not release the names of involved officers, referring those inquiries to the respective department.
