Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin said Tuesday that he may have overstated what he originally called a riot at the Coffee County Jail and that he thinks of the incident as more as a protest. Partin said that his team is looking into the reasons for the protest and that they may include changes that were made by jail staff regarding moving and visitation rights.
Late Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Department released another statement: “On April 14, 2025, the Coffee County Jail experienced a disturbance in the “BA” housing unit of the Jail.
Seven inmates made their way to the top of the janitor closet inside the day room. These inmates, who are listed below, were involved in the disturbance. The Jail notified the Sheriff at about 4:00 pm and he arrived shortly after. Sheriff Partin attempted to communicate with the inmates as to what the issue was.
These inmates refused to comply with the direction of the Jail staff and the Sheriff. Less lethal options were used in an attempt to gain compliance with directions to get down which met with one inmate coming down from the elevated position. At this point, short bursts with a fire hose were utilized to gain compliance from the remaining inmates. At this point, all inmates came down on their own accord.
No criminal charges will be filed against the inmates related to this incident. However, internal disciplinary actions regarding the actions of the inmate could be forthcoming.
