State Rep. Rush Bricken, R-Tullahoma, is encouraging Tennessee families to take advantage of the state's annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, which runs from July 25–27.
The three-day event allows shoppers to buy certain school-related items without paying state sales tax, helping families reduce costs as they prepare for the new academic year.
"This sales tax holiday is a great way for families to save money on clothing, supplies and technology they need for school," Bricken said. "It's a helpful boost during a busy and often expensive season."
During the tax-free weekend, shoppers can purchase the following items without paying state sales tax:
Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, including shirts, pants, shoes, socks and dresses
School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, such as notebooks, crayons, backpacks and calculators
Personal-use computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less
The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases, as long as the items meet state eligibility requirements. A full list of qualifying items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue's website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the nation and does not levy a personal income tax. Since 2012, the General Assembly's Republican supermajority has enacted more than $5.1 billion in tax cuts.
Rush Bricken represents House District 47, which includes Coffee and Grundy counties.
