On Tuesday, August 19, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) reported a preliminary peak power demand of 32,270 megawatts as systemwide temperatures averaged 96 degrees. This marks the highest demand of the summer so far, surpassing the previous peak of 31,888 megawatts recorded on July 30.
The demand comes as the region continues to endure a stretch of extreme heat. TVA officials noted that a few more hot days are expected before conditions begin to moderate later in the week.
“The power system has performed well this week, thanks to the employees at TVA and your local power providers,” said Adam May, TVA Media Relations.
TVA serves nearly 10 million people across seven states in the Southeast, and peak demand periods such as this highlight the importance of maintaining a reliable power grid during times of high energy use.
