DECHERD, Tenn. (July 1, 2025) — The Decherd Police Department has issued a public notice regarding an important update to the speed limit on a key section of Highway 127. Effective immediately, the 40 mph speed zone has been expanded from Interstate Block to Henley Construction. Newly updated speed limit signs have already been posted, and a map has been released to help drivers navigate the changes.
The department shared that the current 40 mph zone is marked in yellow on the map, while the newly added section is highlighted in red/orange.
Why the Change?
Officials cited several critical reasons for adjusting the speed limit:
Crash Reduction: The affected stretch has experienced a higher-than-average crash rate. Lowering speeds is a proven method to decrease both the frequency and severity of accidents.
Traffic Management: With increased traffic volumes, a reduced speed limit helps maintain smoother and safer flow for all road users.
Support for Development: Ongoing residential and commercial developments in the area have altered traffic patterns, requiring updated standards to ensure public safety.
School Zone Protection: A nearby school zone makes slower speeds essential during school hours to safeguard students and families.
30-Day Grace Period
To ease the transition, the department has implemented a 30-day grace period beginning today. During this time, officers will issue warnings instead of citations, provided the driver's speed does not exceed the previous limit.
Full Enforcement Begins August 1
Starting August 1, 2025, the Decherd Police Department will begin full enforcement of the new speed limits. Officers will be authorized to issue citations for violations within the expanded 40 mph zone.
“We’re asking for the public’s cooperation as we make this necessary change for the safety of our community,” said a department spokesperson. “This is about protecting lives and ensuring our roads remain safe for everyone—especially as our town grows.”
Motorists are encouraged to review the updated map and begin adjusting their driving habits immediately. For more information, residents can contact the Decherd Police Department or visit their official website.
