NWS Confirms Tornado in Estill Springs

Estill Springs, TN (May 28, 2025) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Franklin County on the afternoon of May 25, cutting a 6.78-mile path through the area and earning the nickname “Bigfoot Tornado” after passing near a local landmark. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.
Rated EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, the tornado packed estimated peak winds of 93 miles per hour and reached a maximum width of 100 yards. It touched down at 4:01 p.m. CDT just west of Estill Springs, near the Bluegill Grill and Marina, and remained on the ground for approximately seven minutes before lifting just east of Highway 41A at 4:08 p.m.
According to the NWS survey, the tornado caused sporadic damage along its path, primarily to trees. Significant damage was observed along Holiday Drive, Awalt Road, and Rock Creek Road. On Taylor Road, both hardwood and softwood trees were snapped and uprooted. The storm also downed large branches in areas north and east of Estill Springs.
One notable moment in the storm’s path occurred near the Bigfoot RV and Boat Storage facility, where the tornado skirted past the popular Bigfoot statue without causing harm to the local curiosity.
Emergency management officials and NWS teams continue to assess the broader impact of the storm. No structures were reported destroyed, and utility disruptions were minimal.
This event marks another reminder of the quick-forming and localized nature of severe weather in the Tennessee Valley. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant during tornado season and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
