The Shelbyville Police Department is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for the annual "Click It or Ticket" mobilization. This national campaign will run from May 19th through June 1st and will focus on increasing seat belt enforcement across the state.
Chief Phillips emphasizes that seat belt use is a simple way to save lives and avoid injury in the event of a crash. Local law enforcement will be working overtime to ensure drivers and passengers are buckled up, issuing citations day and night.
The release highlights NHTSA data showing that unrestrained vehicle occupant fatalities happen more often at night. Additionally, statistics indicate that males are more likely to be unbuckled in fatal crashes. In Tennessee in 2023, 59% of vehicle occupants killed were unrestrained, and in nighttime crashes, that figure rose to 69%.
Participating law enforcement agencies will be conducting pro-excess speed and seat belt enforcement, issuing citations for violations. In the City Limits of Shelbyville, the maximum penalty for a seat belt violation is $55.00.
The release encourages the public to visit www.tn.gov/safety/seat-belts for more information on seat belt safety.
