Warren County Sheriff Jackie D. Matheny, Jr. has released an important message to parents and guardians, urging them to be vigilant about their children's social media use and the potential dangers it can pose. The message, dated May 5, 2025, emphasizes the need for open and ongoing conversations about online safety.
Sheriff Matheny referenced a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office detailing the arrest of an individual who allegedly used Snapchat to exploit minors. He underscored that while social media is a common part of children’s lives, it also creates opportunities for predators to target and manipulate young people.
The Sheriff strongly advised parents to discuss key safety points with their children, including the nature of their online interactions, the information they share, the risks of meeting online contacts in person, and the importance of reporting suspicious or uncomfortable situations to a trusted adult.
Sheriff Matheny also stressed the importance of parental involvement through monitoring online activity, setting clear boundaries, and maintaining open communication with their children. He stated that while these conversations may be difficult, they are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the community.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office affirmed its commitment to protecting children and called for a collaborative effort with parents. They urged anyone who observes suspicious online behavior or whose child reports something concerning to contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately.
