Jonathan Mayers, co-founder of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, has passed away just two days before the annual event is set to begin in Manchester, Tennessee. The news was shared Tuesday morning through Bonnaroo’s official social media channels.
“Our hearts are extremely heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our Co-Founders, Jonathan Mayers,” the post read. “For more than a decade, Jonathan was a creative force behind this festival that so many of us have held near and dear to our hearts now for more than twenty years.”
Mayers was instrumental in shaping the modern music festival landscape. In 1996, he co-founded the promotion company Superfly alongside Rick Farman, Richard Goodstone, and Kerry Black. The team went on to launch the inaugural Bonnaroo festival in 2002, which quickly became a sold-out success and a model for countless festivals across the country.
In tribute to Mayers’ legacy, organizers announced that a tree will be planted in his memory on the 700-acre site that hosts Bonnaroo each year.
No information has been released regarding the cause of his death.
